Meet UCB Apprentices

Hey, I’m Tom [center]. I am in my final year of my Bachelor of Social Science majoring in Philosophy. My interest in social science initially started with a keen interest in humans and the humanities. I currently am in Sydney, Australia, however at the end of the year I will be returning to Berlin, Germany where I was living for the previous year, until Covid forced me to return to Australia. In Berlin, I seek to continue my studies, doing a Masters in Philosophy.

I am currently working with UCB as part of a university-placed internship. I am very interested in the work we will be doing as it aligns with my core values and my understanding of how best to help the world.

I hope by the end of the project we will be able to create a long term partnership with a local Balinese university and offer content for a course to be run around the ideas of social entrepreneurship.

My name is Leroy Wiseman [right], I am 25 years old and study a Bachelor of Social Science with a double major in Development Studies and Culture Change and Philosophy.

I am passionate about affecting positive social change in the world, in particular by improving the mental, material and physical wellbeing of people. Over the past three years, I have worked and volunteered as a group facilitator, public speaker and facilitator trainer for a not-for-profit organisation called One Eighty Inc, which focuses on youth suicide prevention in Sydney.

My other primary interest was fostered by my second home, Indonesia, where I lived for several years as a teenager. My goal is to work in the community development sphere in Nusa Tenggara Barat, with a specific interest in improving rights of women, increasing educational opportunities for youth, and reducing rates of childhood stunting on the island of Lombok, which are significant in the region.

I believe a key to achieving equitable, sustainable and resilient development in Indonesia is by ensuring equal opportunity is afforded to all people, regardless of their gender, geographic location or socioeconomic background.

Hello changemakers! I’m Joshua Santos [left], a firm believer in the power of collaboration to address the shared challenges we’re facing today!

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, I had the awesome opportunity to visit Bli Komang at the Tampaksiring region in Bali and witness the great works of the UCB. Since then, I’m pleased to have come on board in support of this project.

As a 2020 New Colombo Plan Scholar and final year Macquarie University student undertaking a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) with a degree of Bachelor of Arts – Psychology, I hope to apply my disciplinary knowledge to pursue projects either in the marketing & media, social entrepreneurship or public service spaces; alongside playing my part to advance United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda for Good Health and Wellbeing, Reduced Inequalities, and Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

With my background as an Alumni delegate for the 38th Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program alongside my upcoming delegation at the inaugural Indo-Pacific Student Mobility Youth Dialogue; I look forward to applying my diverse insights to support UCB. But more importantly, come forward with a beginner’s mind and learn from others in this collaborative UCB process.

Many thanks,Joshua
